EVERYDAY LIFE IN THE ANCIENT ROME

In our group you can meet Lavinia, Livia, Iulia…With us you can go back to 2000 years ago and discover customs of the ancient Rome.
While men deal with the Roman army, women of our group try to recreate the different aspects of everyday life in Rome especially in the first century AD, early empire. Therefore we take as our model the Augustan period (31 BC – 14 AD) and the gens Julio-Claudia from Augustus’ death (14 AD) to Nero (68 AD).
According to historical sources (books, carefully selected web sites, statues…) we try to bring into life several typical female subjects such as clothing, footwear, hair styles, jewellery and the beauty care, together with other more general subjects such as medicine and food. We show the result of our researches in the events we take part in, and we do this in different ways. We work at little exhibitions or we try to involve people in an active way, for example by playing Roman games.
We re-enact Roman ceremonies and rituals too, such as the wedding.
In the future we are going to study other subjects such as weaving, dyeing, games, dance and music.
